Transport Infrastructure Ireland reached another key milestone in the development of Luas Finglas. Yesterday, 4 August 2026, it issued Section 78 notices to the landowners along the proposed route whose properties will be partly or wholly purchased to facilitate the construction of the new Luas extension. 

A Railway Order for Luas Finglas was granted in October 2025 and three judicial review challenges to the project were withdrawn in April of this year following negotiations between Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the property owners.

Section 78 notifications are a crucial next step in the process to acquire property so that construction can begin within the accelerated timeline announced recently by Minister Darragh O’Brien.

Originally scheduled to commence in the mid 2030s, Luas Finglas construction has been brought forward to 2028. Transport Infrastructure Ireland is committed to this new target.

The Luas Finglas extension is a transformative infrastructure project that will extend the Luas Green Line by 4 kilometers northward from Broombridge to Charlestown, adding four new stops: Charlestown, St Margaret’s Road, Finglas Village, and St Helena’s.

The Luas Finglas extension is part of the National Development Plan and reflects the government commitment to developing sustainable urban transport.
